UNMC Cafeteria: Second Food Inspection

On the 24th of March 2017, the Welfare Network of the Student Association conducted the second hygiene inspection in the UNMC Cafeteria together with Campus Services and the Health & Safety Office (H&S). Compared to the previous inspection, several questions on the checklist was modified and altered for a more precise inspection. Upon receiving approval from the Campus Services office, it was used as the main guideline for the inspection. Five individuals from the Welfare Network Team, two from both the H&S Office and Campus Services respectively took part in this inspection. Below is the breakdown of results from this month’s food hygiene inspection: 1) Vegetarian Total: 60% a) Personal hygiene: 61.54% – Aprons and gloves were not worn. – Covered shoes were not worn. b) Food: 53.85% – Raw food was not covered and protected from possible contamination. – Raw food was not handled with gloves. – Unfit food was disposed of inappropriately. – Trash cans were uncovered. c) Operation: 55.56% – Cookware were not cleaned regularly. d) Storage: 70% – Stored food was not properly wrapped

On the 16th and 25th of November 2016, the SA conducted a Food Inspection in the UNMC Cafeteria together with Campus Services and the Health & Safety Office (H&S). The SA teams involved were the Sustainability Network, International Student Bureau, Home and Marketing & Communications. The objectives of the inspection were to ensure the quality of service offered by the vendors are of an acceptable standard in terms of hygiene and F&B ethical obligations, among other things. A specific checklist approved by the Campus Services office was used as the main guideline for the inspection. Two individuals from either SA, H&S or Campus Services teamed up to inspect the stalls and also the staff who were on duty. Some of the criteria would include the cleanliness of the workers (whether they dressed appropriately and used proper equipment such as aprons and covered shoes). A thorough inspection of the kitchenware and how ingredients were stored was also done as part of the strict criteria. SA and Health & Safety Office working together to examine one of the stalls at the cafeteria.       SA Executives, Home (left), ISB (right), and also Sustainability, were some of the evaluators in the Inspection. SA and Campus Services Officer tallying the scores of each inspection for the final outcome. Visit from UoRM

On the 5th of October 2016, the Student Association Executives had the honor of welcoming four representatives from the University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) to our university. UoRM is the first overseas campus of the University of Reading in the UK, located in Johor. The purpose of this visit was to learn about the Student Association and understand how each Executive plays a role in the university. With UoRM’s growing student population, the institution is interested in starting their very own student union. During our meeting, we discussed about past experiences, successes and failures, and the challenges executives are usually met with while being part of the SA. Not only did we exchange notes on the roles of the SA staff members and executives, we also had the opportunity to bring the UoRM representatives for a short campus tour and ending the day with late lunch at Secret Recipe.
